Big Joe Road
Lake Joseph, Muskoka, Ontario
2006-2008

The move up to the big lake was carefully planned by this active family. The property was acquired after years of searching. I recall many occasions trudging through knee-deep snow, itemizing the pros and cons of innumerable lesser properties prior to finding this prime setting. It was clear from the outset that this summer house had to embrace its relationship with the land and lake. Rendered in a warm white, the main house, boathouse and out buildings refer back to traditional clapboard cabins that once dotted the pristine shores of Ontario's northern lakes. The aesthetic is clean and free of clutter. Architectural ornament is achieved only through the expression of the exposed beams, rafters and decking. White washed surfaces are set off against the deep brown of the antique rock elm flooring.

The light filled interiors are integrally tied to the rugged nature of the landscape through the incorporation of flowing screened porches. These generous outdoor rooms are the real living spaces of home, where lounging, dining and even cooking are accommodated.

Although the cottage is rarely lacking of guests, it is the one place where the owners truly feel together as a family.
